While traveling through the Atacama Desert on a bus ride that was only supposed to take 8 hours, I realized that I needed an altimeter to understand my current elevation. When you are stuck in the mountains and you are supposed to be on the beach, you need to know where you are. GPS isn't always available and cellphones only last for so long. Grab your altimeter and go!
